Repair or Replace? How to Decide If Your Laptop Is Worth Fixing
When a laptop breaks, the big question is whether to fix it or start fresh. There's no single answer, but a few simple guidelines make the decision clear.
The cost rule of thumb
A useful starting point: if the repair costs less than roughly half the price of a comparable new laptop, repairing usually makes sense. If it approaches or exceeds that, replacing becomes worth considering.
Age and specification
A two or three-year-old laptop with a decent processor and enough memory is generally well worth fixing, it has years of life left. A very old or underpowered machine that was slow even when healthy is a weaker case for an expensive repair.
The type of fault matters
Common faults, a screen, battery, keyboard, charging port or drive, are usually straightforward and economical to repair. Severe motherboard or liquid damage on an older laptop is more of a judgement call, where the cost-versus-age balance comes in.
Upgrades can change everything
Sometimes the laptop isn't broken, just slow. An SSD and a memory upgrade can make an old machine feel brand new for a fraction of the cost of replacing it, often the smartest spend of all.
Don't forget your data
Even if a laptop isn't worth repairing, the data inside often is. Recovering your files is usually possible and far cheaper than the loss of losing them.
Repairing or upgrading a working laptop keeps it out of landfill and is kinder to the environment than replacing it, a small bonus on top of the money saved.
