Spilled Water on Your Laptop? Do These 5 Things First
A spill on your laptop is an emergency, and what you do in the first few minutes genuinely decides whether it survives. Liquid plus electricity plus metal equals corrosion, and corrosion spreads. Move fast and calmly through these steps.
1. Power it off immediately — hold the button
Don't shut down normally and don't wait. Press and hold the power button for 5–10 seconds to force it off straight away. The longer the board stays powered with liquid on it, the more components can short out.
2. Unplug everything and remove the battery if you can
Disconnect the charger and any accessories. If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out. Cutting all power stops electrical damage in its tracks.
3. Wipe up and turn it upside down
Wipe away visible liquid with a dry cloth, then open the laptop fully and stand it upside down like a tent so the liquid drains out rather than deeper into the keyboard and board.
4. Leave it off — do not test it
This is the hardest part: resist turning it on to "check if it works." Powering up a wet board is the single most common way a recoverable spill becomes a dead laptop. Leave it off and get it looked at.
Don't put it in rice (it does nothing useful and leaves dust and starch inside). Don't plug it in or charge it. Don't use a hairdryer's heat — you'll push moisture deeper and can warp components.
5. Get it to a repair shop quickly
Even if it seems fine, sugary and salty liquids (coffee, juice, soft drinks) keep corroding the board for days. The best outcome comes from a professional clean before corrosion sets in — ideally within 24–48 hours. A proper service opens the laptop, removes the battery, and ultrasonically cleans the board to stop the damage.
