Laptop Screen Flickering? 6 Causes and How to Fix It

A flickering laptop screen is distracting and a little alarming, but it isn't always bad news. Sometimes it's a two-minute software fix; sometimes it's a hardware fault. Here are the six usual causes, roughly from easiest to most serious, and a simple test to tell them apart.

1. Wrong refresh rate or display setting

An incorrect screen refresh rate can cause a steady flicker. Check your display settings and set the refresh rate to the recommended value for your screen. It's a quick thing to rule out first.

2. Outdated or corrupt graphics driver

A bad graphics driver is one of the most common causes of flicker. Updating the driver, or cleanly reinstalling it, fixes a lot of cases, especially flicker that started after an update.

3. A misbehaving app

Here's a quick test on Windows: open Task Manager and watch it. If the screen flickers but Task Manager doesn't, an app is the culprit. If Task Manager flickers too, it's a driver or hardware issue. Uninstall or update any app that flickers.

4. A loose or damaged display cable

The thin cable that runs through the hinge to the screen can work loose or fray over time. The tell-tale sign: the flicker changes, worsens or stops when you move or flex the lid. That points to the cable rather than software.

5. A failing screen or backlight

If the flicker comes with lines, dim patches, or discolouration, the panel or its backlight may be failing. This usually means the screen itself needs replacing.
